Sacred Spaces 303 – Oh, inconsistent me…

Sacred Spaces 303 – Oh, inconsistent me…

29 August 2011

“Oh, inconsistent me
Crying out for consistency”
(Relient K)

We all need some more consistency. I see it in my own life and in the lives of others.
We can be so up and down in following Jesus.

Psalm 139: 23, 24:
“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

God, we have anxious thoughts.
And God we NEED to be led in the way everlasting.

So many ways “lie” before us. And lie they do… We have walked those ways… to no avail… just left with confused and broken hearts.

With this life (our lives), we should not and cannot live in our strength.

Do you feel like me? Tired of being inconsistent or up and down?

I came across this quote:

“I refuse to believe that exclusion, smoking pot, casual sex, criminal records, disengagement, hot temper, and disrespect is what any of the young people in God’s world were made for. This stuff isn’t natural to them. Yes, it might have become second nature to them. But first nature – those are the things of God. Each person is made for God, flourishes in light and only finds fulfilment in God’s ways for them. So when we offer people these chances to explore being part of God’s actions in doing things for others, or in framing their lives around God’s ways, we find that this good news is the best news for them, and that God’s image in them shines when they reflect his ways.”

(Found it on my friends blog over here: unknown source quote)

I implore you, young people; to go to God with all of your being. With all of your lives: He is concerned with EVERY aspect of your life.

God sees your pain. He sees you’re hurt. He sees your worry. He has a plan for your life. He can forgive you and remove the guilt you feel. He aches when you follow the ways of the world. Turning to drinking, seeking “to be cool” and worrying what others think about you.

This song from Hillsong United (Search my heart) comes to mind:

“Without you I am nothing.”

(For the whole song, go here:
Comes with some awesome pictures in the video)

I want to encourage you with this truth from 1 John 4: 4:
“You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them (meaning the world), because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”

When you as a young person (in fact, this truth is for everyone, every age) give your life to God, He chooses to live inside of us. That is incredible and profound truth.
So how do we live our lives differently knowing that truth?

So being a teenager is difficult.
Being an adult is difficult.
Being a parent is difficult.
Life is difficult.

But remember this truth from 1 John 4: 4. We have overcome! Jesus is strong in us.
Let’s not live inconsistent lives…

Also in thinking about today’s SS I thought of this quote I have used before and some of you may be familiar with:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
Marianne Williamson

Who are you not to shine like this?
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us!

ALL of US, young and old… can we rise up to this occasion?

The world is mad… and we NEED our Saviour DESPERATELY.

“We can’t medicate man to perfection again
We can’t legislate peace in our hearts
We can’t educate sin from our souls
It’s been there from the start

But the blind lead the blind into bottomless pits
Still we smile and deny that we’re cursed
But of all our iniquities
Ignorance may be the worst

Something’s gone terribly wrong
With everyone
All the world is mad
Darkness brings terrible things
The sun is gone
What vanity! Our sad, wretched fires”
(Thrice – All the world is made)

(Check out their rad live video for this song:

WE can’t do this by ourselves any longer!

I may have thrown in a lot of verses and quotes and this may seem a little “all over the show” HOWEVER truth is… we need this conviction and question:

How consistent are you in following Jesus?

If He is supposed to be the Lord of your life (and mine);

– Should we not keep Him on the throne of our lives? With us listening to His instruction and leading.
– Should we not trust Him more?
– Should we not listen to Him more? So we should be a more praying people, right?
– Should people be able to see that we love Jesus with all of our hearts?

So to teens, to adults, to parents, my friends, my family, to anyone who reads this…
Pray for me, pray for yourselves (lets pray for each other), as we seek and learn more and more about how to live these totally relying on God lives.

Half-hearted ness is not gonna get us far…
