Sacred Spaces 312– Where’s your inspiration?
1 November 2011
I am sitting in the Eagle and Child Pub now. (Follow this link). This pub is situated in Oxford (about 25 mins away from where I live.) I sit here writing this week’s Sacred Space. (I have been meaning to write a SS here for a long time.) While I write I am drinking Ale. (Yes, Ale; to all my friends who think I just drink cider… I have that “real man” side to me too! 🙂 )
Many years ago CS Lewis and J R R Tolkien used to sit in here and share writing ideas.
Last year May (2010) when I was praying and thinking about whether or not I should take the job at Bicester Methodist Church; knowing that this pub would be close to me swayed that decision positively.
I begin asking you: where’s your inspiration? Who is your inspiration?
There is a song by Anberlin – Burn out Brighter (Northern Lights):
“Live, I wanna live inspired…. die, I wanna die for something, higher than myself”
Listen to the song here:
We can look around and see how many people just don’t live inspired! It’s a shame.
We are called to not just merely exist! YET to LIVE with INSPIRATION!
John 10: 10 has been the theme verse of my life for many years now: “Jesus says; I have come that they may have life and life to the full.” I want in on that.
CS Lewis has been a big inspiration to me. The God I found in the pages of his Chronciles of Narnia stirred some deep truths and a deep hunger within me. For the 2 years that I read that book, Jesus met me in an incredible uncanny way. His Spirit revealed new things to me the as I continue (even to this day), in my following and growing into His image.
I have not arrived yet. But by His Spirit, Jesus is constantly my inspiration for this incredible journey and life…I find myself in.
For the last few months I have struggled when people suggest that they can’t offer ideas or anything or when they throw out the lie “I am not creative!” How can people speak such untruths about themselves?
Don’t listen to that lie!
You have all the inspiration and all the creation you need. Because you are made in His image.
Is not God a creator God? If you are made is His image, then you are creative too!
Think about God’s character? He is: good, powerful, incredible, forgiving, creative, loving, patient and present. (These are just a few)
If we are made in His image, then at “our most beautiful” we have those qualities too!
Yes, life and its temptations and our sin corrupt that image. YET God offers a solution. Through the death of His son, Jesus we are restored.
Inspiration is contagious. Get infected!
Pause, thank God for your earthly inspirations. From preachers to authors to even apparently ordinary people such as your family and friends, God has used all sorts to pass on His inspiration.
And mostly by His spirit let Jesus be your inspiration; because He did say in 1 John 4: 4:
“You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”
Live well. Live inspired!
