Sacred Spaces 373– A reason to sing
2 April 2013
Firstly the credits of the picture go to my artistic friend: Darren, find him here: https://twitter.com/darrengoosen
When I saw this picture he took I couldn’t help but think this collection of musings:
We have a reason to sing.
The photograph shows an empty cross. And it shows a speaker and guitars.
It shows a stunning sunrise in the distance. It shows a city full of emotions. Full of pain, full of potential; oh, how we know that pictures carry a lot.
I thought of the empty cross.
Galatians 5: 1 puts it this way: “It is for freedom that we have been set free; so don’t let your-self be burdened again by the yoke of slavery.” How true is that?!
We are free. So why do we live so shackled?
I thought of the speaker and the guitars. They speak of one’s responses to the Cross; the empty cross: Others have put it this way:
“The greatest day in history, death is beaten
You have rescued me
Sing it out, Jesus is alive
The empty cross, the empty grave
Life eternal, You have won the day” (Tim Hughes)
“We were sons of insurrection, doomed to face the dark alone.
‘Till vicarious perfection, dearly won, was made our own.
So where’s your landslide, where’s your victory?
Tell me now, where’s your sting?” (Thrice)
How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now I’m found
Was blind, but now I see” (John Newton)
Those artists have reason to sing. So do we?! So how will you respond?
What will the words of your song be?
Sadly many people don’t express themselves… we NEED to.
It’s in us!!
However, worship happens regardless of us, Jesus put it like this:
“If they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.” (Luke 19: 40)
“The mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.” (Isaiah 55: 12)
So when we sing, when we offer our words, know that we join in with an entire symphony of worship that is taking place already.
The photograph captures the sun dancing in the clouds welcoming the new day.
Again I ask, what will you sing? Because you have the reason to….
The ground shakes
The stones rumble beneath my feet
Is that a song I hear?
The trees clap their hands
Is that possible?
For You, yes!
